Fear of needles is widespread, affecting nearly two-thirds of children and a quarter of adults. Even healthcare workers are not immune—one study found that 27 percent of hospital employees avoided the flu vaccine due to this phobia.
To address this issue, Dutch company FlowBeams has introduced BoldJet, a groundbreaking needle-free injection system. Using a laser to heat liquid, the device generates high-velocity “liquid microjets” that penetrate the skin. While terms like “laser” and “high-velocity” may sound intimidating, the ultra-thin microjets make the process far less painful than traditional injections.
Beyond patient comfort, BoldJet offers additional benefits: it reduces medical waste, eliminates accidental needlestick injuries, and enhances safety for healthcare workers. Recognizing its potential, CES honored BoldJet with a 2025 Innovation Award.
“The novel approach of BoldJet by FlowBeams fixes a critical component of the health sector,” said FlowBeams CEO Lea Milovich. “Our ambitions for BoldJet will fundamentally change how we think about patient care and healthcare worker safety while positively contributing to saving our planet.”
