The highly anticipated Australian adaptation of the popular BBC sitcom Ghosts has announced its cast, promising a stellar lineup for the eight-part series. This marks the third iteration of the beloved concept, following the success of the original UK version and its American counterpart.
Similar to its predecessors, the Australian Ghosts will center on a couple who inherit a historic country mansion, only to discover it is inhabited by a quirky group of ghosts.
According to reports from Deadline, the central couple will be played by Tamala Shelton, known for her role in Nowhere Boys, and Rowan Witt.
The spectral residents of their newly acquired home will be portrayed by a talented ensemble cast. Mandy McElhinney will play Eileen, an Irish mother of 13 who survived the potato famine. Brent Hill will embody Gideon, a stoic naval officer. Ines English will take on the role of Miranda, a socialite and bride-to-be from the 1900s. Michelle Brasier will play Lindy, a vibrant 1980s aerobics instructor.
Completing the ghostly lineup are George Zhao, who will portray Joon, a young Chinese miner from the Gold Rush era, and Jackson Tozer as Satan, a misunderstood motorbike gang member from the 1990s with a hidden soft side.
Daniel Monaghan, Paramount Australia’s SVP, Content and Programming, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Ghosts Australia boasts a stellar cast and an incredibly talented creative team. We can’t wait to bring this witty and heartfelt show to life, complete with our set of uniquely Australian ghosts.”
Filming for the series is already underway in Western Australia, and it is scheduled to premiere on Network 10 and Paramount+ later this year.
This announcement comes after the original UK version of Ghosts, starring Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe as the couple Alison and Mike Cooper, concluded its five-season run in December 2023. Interestingly, Smith-Bynoe recently expressed his interest in exploring a storyline from the American adaptation where his character gets possessed by the ghosts, should he ever reprise his role. He told Metro, “[The] American [version of] Ghosts did an episode where the husband gets possessed by the other ghosts and I’d love to do that. That’d be fun. I’d love that if you, [the BBC] are listening.”
The Australian adaptation, Ghosts Australia, is poised to bring a fresh, local perspective to the beloved supernatural sitcom.
